Vietnamese Food Highlight: Pho

What is Pho?

In English, this Vietnamese classic is rice noodle soup. However, in modern times, it is widely known by its Vietnamese name, Pho (pronounced fuuuh). If there is any food that represents Vietnamese cuisine, Pho would be the unanimous winner. The recipe to create this National Vietnamese dish is quite simple: rice noodles, broth, and beef meat or chicken sprinkled with herbs and vegetables. Although appearing to be simple, many Vietnamese restaurants have distinct tastes and variations of it.

Pho Ga vs. Pho Bo

Vietnamese Pho usually comes in two variations - beef or chicken, Pho bo or Pho ga respectively. Pho bo gives the choice of flank, tendon, brisket, or tripe beef, while Pho ga has dark or white meat. Good broth comes from their respective choice of meat, coming directly from the meat itself.

Rice Noodles

As the name suggests, rice noodles are simply noodles that come from rice. Rice noodles are most common in the cuisines of East and Southeast Asia. In Vietnam, there are endless acres of rice fields, hence adding to the popularity and reach of Pho as a National dish.

When should I eat Pho?

Enjoy Pho anytime during the day! In Vietnam, one can have this for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or even a snack! Vietnamese food is generally one of the more healthy options amongst all Asian cuisines. Our culture prizes fresh tastes with dishes that have herbs and vegetables. As the same goes with the people in Vietnam, Pho can be enjoyed at almost every Vietnamese restaurant for breakfast, lunch, or dinner!

Also, Pho is known to help people who need soup when they are sick or cold, have an aching hangover, or want something different in their diet.

Where can I find Pho?

Pho can be found worldwide! Almost every Vietnamese restaurant in San Diego should feature Pho on top of their menu. While the same dish, guests may experience different tastes from each establishment.
